FAA Seeks Ways to Register UAVs

Mounting safety concerns and a Congressional directive to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to introduce rules for the safe integration of drones in the US airspace system are expected to result in all unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) in the US having aircraft registrations. This will include privately owned quadcopters and hobby drones. Currently, commercially operated large drones are being registered with the FAA and there are regulations for their operation - but it is the smaller, non-commercial machines, which are unregulated, that pose a threat to aircraft in the system. The task facing the FAA is enormous, with thousands of drones being sold, and compounded by a major exercise currently in progress to cull thousands of inactive aircraft from the register.
