Piaggio Aerospace rolled out the first prototype of its Multirole Patrol Aircraft (MPA) in Genoa on November 9. It is now being prepared for ground and flight testing, with the latter expected to begin in early 2016. Based on the P180 Avanti business aircraft, the MPA was launched at the Farnborough Air Show in 2012 and has been developed in association with Abu Dhabi Autonomous System Investments (ADASI). It incorporates a 50% increase in wing span compared with the Avanti; a 35% enlargement of the tailplane and 20% bigger forward canard wing surfaces. New scimitar propeller blades have also been incorporated and the fuel tanks are 50% bigger. Equipment fit will include a new Saab Albatros mission system, Telephonies RDR-1700B radar with ground moving target indicator and synthetic aperture radar mapping modes, EO/IR turret, Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion avionics suite, AIS (automatic identification system) and IFF.
