The Royal Navy's largest ever warship, the new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08) went to sea for the first time on June 26. Having left the basin at Rosyth, where construction of the carrier began in 2014, and negotiated three bridges over the Forth, she headed into the North Sea for six weeks of testing, escorted by the Type 23 frigates HMS Sutherland and HMS Iron Duke. The 65,000-ton warship and her complement of around 700 crew is commanded by Capt Jerry Kyd and supported by about 200 industry contractors.
