The RAF Lakenheath-based 48th Fighter Wing (FW) unveiled the first of three 'retro' F-15s to be painted in commemorative D-Day paint schemes during a ceremony on Jan 31. Boeing F-15E Strike Eagle, 97-0219, belonging to the 492nd Fighter Squadron was the first to be revealed. It wears red-and-white checkerboard markings and invasion stripes reminiscent of those applied to the Republic P-47 Thunderbolts flown by the 48th FW during World War Two.
