HURRICANE SQUADRON IN THE EYE OF BATTLE PART 2

From Hibaldstow, near Lincoln, 253 Squadron began operating at night in the autumn of 1941 as part of the night defences for the Midlands industrial area. It began training with a novel method to intercept enemy bombers. An airborne searchlight was housed in the glazed nose of Douglas Turbinlite' Havocs of 1459 Flight, which were paired with a 'parasite' fighter. The procedure involved the Havoc detecting and illuminating the bomber for the Hurricane to engage. The squadron also undertook night intruder work over the Continent at this time.
