These past few years have seen the publication of a whole shelf-full of new or reissued volumes commemorating the centennial of flight. Some focus on hardware―either painted or photographed―including impressive volumes such as the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund's Wright to Fly: Celebrating 100 Years of Powered Flight, which features chronologically arranged paintings of aircraft from the Wright Flyer to the recently introduced Eurofighter Typhoon, created by some of the world's best aviation artists. As you might expect, aviation photography is well represented in the mix, with hefty coffee-table tomes celebrating specific plane types, such as Erik Hildebrandt's Heritage Flight: Photographs of America's Greatest Fighters, or more eclectic compilations, such as Fredric Winkowski and Frank D. Sullivan's 100 Planes, 100 Years: The First Century of Aviation. Another impressive photographic essay, The. Wright Brothers Legacy: Orville and Wilbur Wright and Their Aeroplanes, by Walt Burton and Owen Findsen, narrows the focus, presenting a stunning compilation of images of Wright family members as well as their legendary flying machines.
