Look out auto industry, the Gates have opened. Software companies, probably led by mega-powerful Microsoft, are corning into your domain with an attitude. It is almost a certainty that software makers will have a piece of every vehicle within five years. "Microsoft understands that the auto industry will produce and sell 50 to 60 million vehicles a year worldwide in the next decade," says Bill Pochiluk, a partner at Autofacts, a division of Coopers & Lybrand Consulting. "It wants a royalty on each of those cars and trucks." That's an ambitious plan for one company, but then many companies have dismissed Microsoft and lived to regret it.
