Amid all the excitement about Audi's aluminium A2, spare a thought for the 1920s Pomeroy. Laurence H Pomeroy, born 1883, was apprenticed to the North London Locomotive Co. He went on to work for civil engineers and then joined Thornycroft, maker of steam and internal combustion engined vehicles and boats. He became assistant to the chief engineer at Vauxhall in 1906, where he created the legendary Prince Henry sporting models, from which was developed one of the finest drivers' - as opposed to chauffeurs' - cars of the vintage era, the 30/98. He had been elected to the council of the Institution of Automobile Engineers at the age of 28, having become works manager at Vauxhall two years earlier.
