DaimlerChrysler opened a Virtual Reality Centre at Mercedes-Benz Passenger Car Development in Sindelfingen in Germany in mid April as part of its strategy of bringing specialists in different areas under one roof. "When specialists from different areas work together, it is very important that they are able to get along with each other and avoid any misunderstandings pertaining to the processes necessary for conducting their work," says Dr Hans-Joachim Schopf, Mercedez-Benz Passenger Car board member and chief engineer. "What better way for them to achieve this goal than by actually being able to see the subject of their discussions and decisions? This is where the Virtual Reality Centre comes in. Each project team member can see whatever the group happens to be discussing at any given moment. Moreover, the results of such discussions can literally be carried away and reworked in the form of a data set. Such a technique allows problems and their solutions to be recognised more quickly and leads to fewer errors and misunderstandings. Products can therefore be brought to an advanced stage much sooner than before.
