The drive to reduce engine weight, vibration and noise creates significant problems for engine designers. The reduction in engine weight generally results in a reduction in stiffness. The difficulties for designers are compounded by the demand for zero leakage of flanged joints. Gone are the days when the occasional drip of oil or even staining of the engine exterior is acceptable. To achieve these goals, designers need to develop innovative solutions and use advanced sealing techniques.
