You might suppose that if hemp were to be found in a Ford that it would most likely be in the form of cannabis resin hidden in the glove compartment of a Fiesta XE2i occupied by a number of youths. But do not jump to conclusions. It could soon be quite common. According to Robert West, project leader of the Biomat project at British science and technology organisation QinetiQ, it might soon be possible for carmakers to take advantage of organic industrial materials such as hemp in the production of vehicles. The notion of applying such organic materials to vehicles is not new; it has been discussed for several years. What is different is that Biomat aims to conclude its investigations into the potential of natural plant fibres as a raw material for the automotive industry by producing sample components for Ford and Triumph vehicles.
