Automotive meltdown as redundancies hit Europe

Wolfsburg, Germany/ ZURICH, Switzerland Europe's largest carmaker, the Volkswagen group, and the world's biggest OEM, General Motors, both look set to follow Ford's lead in slashing jobs in a move that is being termed as "automotive meltdown" by many industry observers. Ford last month finally confirmed the closure of Jaguar's ailing Browns Lane plant, with Land Rover's Solihull site only staying open for business thanks to a last ditch rescue package. Now the automotive redundancy wave has swept over to Germany and mainland Europe where a question mark has been placed on nearly 30 per cent of VW's workforce.
