Future 4x4s and rally cars could be developed in less time and offer improved capabilities because of greater reliance on modelling and simulation rather than subjective assessments from arduous test drives in difficult terrain. But there is an alternative. Cranfield University's School of Applied Sciences in the UK has launched an off-road dynamics facility at its Silsoe campus. Building on the university's reputation in soil dynamics, the £1.35 million centre will further research into the design and development of off-road vehicles and anything else with a machine/ground interaction.
