Sales of hybrid cars and SUVs in the US are booming. But in Europe the technology is regarded more coolly. Wolfgang Steiger, director of powertrain operations at Volkswagen, is no hybrid enthusiast. That was clear from a presentation he made at a conference in London entitled Cost-effective low-carbon powertrains for future vehicles, run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
