Industrial lubricants group Castrol is working with vehicle manufacturers and suppliers of automotive steels, adhesives and welding systems on a dry film lubrication technology that could replace the anti-corrosion fluids that are usually used to protect steel coils. Liquid coatings for coils have several disadvantages, Castrol says. Consistent coverage is difficult and during the rolling process the liquid is often forced to the outside of the coils. In some cases there are environmental issues and the coatings can trap particles which means the steel has to be washed before processing.
