Like a cat with nine lives, LDV keeps bouncing back from its recurrent crises. Now under new ownership, the van maker is looking for a period of stability. The Washwood Heath site, once the home of Wolseley Cars, has for over 40 years been the site of Birmingham's van manufacture. From the ubiquitous Morris J4 and BMC J4 of the 1960s, the plant progressed to make Freight Rover Sherpas. In 1987 it became Leyland Daf Vans and in 1989 embarked on a now-defunct joint venture with Renault (known as Excel) to make 60,000 vans annually; Four years later, in receivership when Leyland Daf collapsed, LDV became a management buyout with 3i. In 2000 an attempt to link with VW failed. Then came Daewoo. Late last year, LDV simply "ran out of money" and went into administration. The assets were acquired by Sun Europe, an affiliate of Sun Capital Partners, a US private equity capital company managing over USD3.5 billion. Its affiliates have acquired 110 companies with combined sales of USD27 billion.
