Mazda and Nissan are using nanotechnology to cut the cost of three-way catalysts for gasoline engines. High demand for precious metals is driving their cost up.rnBoth OEMs have reduced the amount of platinum and palladium needed, while keeping the same conversion rates of NOx, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide.rnMazda is claiming a world-first for using single, nanosized particles and says it can cut the amount of precious metals used by 70-90 per cent.
