In September, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 202a comes into effect in the US to improve cars' whiplash protection. The regulation will require carmakers to install in front seats either dynamic head restraints or larger, firmer static cushions that sit closer to the occupants' heads. Most will avoid the static solution - their size messes up the interior's styling. And for people who wear their baseball caps back-to-front and men - or even women - with pony-tails it could be uncomfortable. Whiplash occurs in accidents when the vehicle is hit in the rear.
