Lotus two-stroke beats stratified-charge on fuel

Bench-testing of a prototype Lotus engine Indicates that its fuel economy is 10% better than stratified direct-injection gasoline engines at low engine speeds and loads. And, because its novel design allows it to achieve homogeneous charge-compression ignition (HCCI) at very light loads, NOx levels are lower too.
