Oems increase R&D spending to reduce fleet CO2 emissions

OEMs are investing more heavily in R&D projects as they work to meet stricter CO2 emissions legislation. From next year fleet-average CO2 emissions levels will be 120g/km, and by 2020 OEMs' fleets can emit no more than 95g/km CO2, forcing manufacturers to look at new technologies. Company figures show that both VW and Daimler invested the most in their R&D divisions as they tried to meet the targets, with expenditure of €3.5 billion and €2.7 billion respectively Dr Dieter Zetsche, chairman of the board of management at Daimler, said: "We're introducing particularly fuel-efficient four-, six- and eight cylinder engines and the eco-start-stop technology in additional models, further reducing the fleet's CO2 emissions."
