Few topics polarise opinions as strongly as alternative powertrains. It's rare now to hear any suggestion that the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is not cause for concern, but the answers to the problem? That's another matter. For legislators, it means enforcing reductions in tailpipe emissions in line with a tightening set of targets. So for OEMs, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles are becoming increasingly attractive solutions because sub-100g/km and zero-emission models can make a big difference to fleet averages.
