Audi's hot estates were born in the 1990s when the firm collaborated with Porsche to develop the RS2. With its turbocharged five-cylinder gasoline engine, that car showed that you could mix practicality and performance. From a standing start it could accelerate to 100km/h in under five seconds - performance that could match sports cars of the time - but it had enough space to carry passengers and luggage. Since then Audi's high-performance vehicle portfolio has grown dramatically, thanks to the development work done at the firm's subsidiary Quattro. The latest vehicle to join the fleet is the third-generation RS6, and it had to meet the same performance and practicality criteria as the RS2. But it also had to satisfy tougher limits on tailpipe emissions.
