Today’s road users expect highways which are safe at all times and available also throughout the winter. This paper describes an integrated «preventive winter service» ap-proach involving use of technology, logistics management, operations management and traffic management. By using the most up-to-date liquid spreading method, whereby brine is sprayed on the road surface at a travelling speed of up to 80 km per hour. This preven-tive intervention can be triggered before bad weather hits, and even during periods of heavy traffic. Management of the logistic chain for de-icing supplies no longer focuses on average use over the winter, but on ability to keep going for several days at a time. Opera-tions management is the key management element here. Constant monitoring of the weather is assured using the most modern forecasting models. This enables a response rhythm of 72-24-3/1 hours in advance (adjust resources – prepare to mount operation – call in designated supervisor/drivers). The work is coordinated by an operations central control, which is responsible for 250 to 500 km of highway. Traffic management enables road users to anticipate and adjust to the particular circumstances. Post-evaluations trig-ger actions that ensure continual improvement. Using this «preventive winter mainte-nance» approach, road providers can meet the requirements of today’s road users throughout the winter season.
