Solutions to consumption and emissions reduction are many and varied, but the dominant trend for gasoline engines is downsizing, It's been delivering impressive results so far, and there's still a lot of potential. Daimler is one of the OEMs exploiting it, and has introduced its second-generation, turbocharged, direct-injection engine family in the latest Mercedes-Benz A- and B-Class compact cars. Here, the four-cylinders are mounted transversely, but the design is modular and was developed from the outset for longitudinal installation in models such as the larger C- and E-Class. To cover the heavier vehicle segments, a 1,991cc derivative has been developed from the basic 115kW/250Nm, 1,595cc version. As well as fuel efficiency, driveability and refinement are key attributes.
