Small, light, high-performance C-segment hatchbacks have been popular for decades. From the first Volkswagen Golf GTI in 1976, these vehicles have appealed to consumers who want the combination of performance with a car they can use every day. SEAT'S first foray into the sector was with the Leon Cupra, launched in the 1990s. That vehicle used a 132kW, 1.8-litre gasoline engine, while there was also a more powerful 154kW variant. The firm has now developed the third generation of the hatchback. While consumers still want the balance of performance and practicality, its engineers have had to bow to emissions legislation and make the vehicle run cleaner. The third-generation Leon Cupra uses a four-cylinder 2-litre turbocharged gasoline engine that produces 206kW/350Nm. There's also a lower-powered, 195kW/350Nm variant, too - allowing it to accelerate to 100km/h in 5,7 seconds and reach a top speed of 250km/h.
