Just the facts. It's a simple phrase but one that can be very effective when you want to make progress - in meetings, for example, especially the kind that seem to go on with no end in sight. I wonder how often these words, or ones like them, are used in meetings between the industry and Europe's politicians on the subject of emissions targets. Because the same arguments are still going on about those, and will almost certainly continue to do so for the foreseeable future, Senior representatives from several OEMs have criticised the European Commission's target-setting process for a lack of scientific basis. The numbers, they say, are based on political wish rather than quantitative analysis. The manufacturers say they want to be involved in the process much sooner: one engineer told me that they normally get consulted after the targets are set. It would be nice to be consulted a little bit before, he said, and he would welcome closer cooperation with the commission.
