The main criticism levelled at battery-electric vehicles is the apparent limited range that they provide on a single charge, Whether or not consumers actually require greater range from a car is debatable, but the fact that the market demands it means engineers must develop battery technologies that can take people further. When the Nissan Leaf was first introduced in 2011, the official range was 160km on a single charge. And, although research data suggested that this was more than sufficient for most drivers, our relationship with combustion engine vehicles has meant that the challenge was to go much further after unplugging our electric cars from the grid. Nissan has slowly increased the Leaf's range from that initial 160km to more than 199km without having to change the battery technology, But the OEM has now integrated a pack that allows the compact hatchback to travel up to 250km on a single charge.
