Turbocharged direct-injection triples are now becoming the gasoline engine of choice for OEMs looking to maximise efficiency in vehicles as large as compact cars. Gone are the days of relatively cheap port-injected four-cylinder engines. OEMs from Ford to BMW are using the smaller-displacement engines to achieve the dual targets of competing with diesel units and meeting emissions targets, Hyundai-Kia introduced its first three-cylinder unit in 2010 to power vehicles including the B-segment Hyundai ilO and Kia Picanto, But the need to offer greater performance and to use the technology in larger vehicles has meant that the OEM has now developed a direct-injection, turbocharged variant of its three-cylinder Kappa gasoline engine which will be used in European cars.
