The industry is so focused on meeting future emissions targets that often other issues appear to receive far less coverage. You can't argue with the importance of reducing emissions, which is why powertrain and transmission technology receive so much attention. But there are huge chunks of research budgets being used to design technologies that could have an equally big impact, and not just on emissions. The electronics architecture has been an integral part of the vehicle since the CANbus was developed in the 1980s, but the amount of data that is now in cars has grown exponentially. Powertrain complexity is one reason for the growth, but increased numbers of advanced driver-assistance systems, more complex infotainment and greater levels of connectivity are all pushing the boundaries of what is achievable on current bus networks.
