Emissions show dramatic drop over past two decades

Average new car emissions have fallen by almost 34% over the past 20 years, European Environment Agency (EEA) figures show. In 2014, average emissions were 123.4g/km CO_2, compared with 186g/km CO_2 in 1995. The industry, largely driven by ever stricter legislation, has made concerted efforts to improve vehicle efficiency and reduce the amount of carbon emitted from tailpipes. Erikjonnaert, the general secretary of ACEA, which represents Europe's vehicle manufacturers, said: "Thanks to efforts by European automobile manufacturers and investment in research and development, Europe's cars meet the highest environmental standards in the world."
