The automotive industry is facing a challenging time. Tough limits on fleet-average CO_2 emissions, the introduction of real-world testing and a host of other constraints are pushing powertrain development harder than ever. But with challenges come opportunities. The need to evaluate concepts quickly and accurately has seen a surge in the use of simulation techniques such as in-cylinder computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Although driven partly by necessity, this trend has been helped greatly by more complex software and a dramatic reduction in the cost of processing power. It's led to techniques that were once the preserve of academics and advanced research departments entering the mainstream.
