It is a subject that is growing in importance in engineering as customers increasingly want lighter parts with better performance, reliability and service life. As one example for the automotive industry, surface treatments mean lighter and more efficient engines that absorb less power to drive themselves. Plasma nitriding is being increasingly used for this job, as operational costs come down and its range of applications increases. It is also less polluting than the alternatives, gas and salt bath nitriding.
