Home-grown Terrorism and Radicalisation Activities: More Than Meets the Eye

As some Western countries look to come to terms with the growing threat of home-grown terrorism, so too must they undergo a transformation in how they understand the nature and qualities of this threat. This is especially true of these countries' law enforcement services, for whom this type of activity and its accompanying indicators and their meaning are frequently lost or poorly understood. For organisations accustomed to following an evidentiary trail of familiar and relatively easily recognisable illicit activity, the investigation of the type of discreet, and, in themselves, sometimes lawful behaviours which characterise the radicalisation process, can be problematic.
