Regionally issue crops up again

The recent news that the Geographic Indications Committee (GIC) has made final determinations for the proposed Manjimup and Pemberton regions in Western Australia has again raised the 'regionality issue' for Australian winemakers. At the same time, the Registrar of Trademarks has advised the GIC that it has received objections to the proposed Geographical Indications of 'Great Western', 'Penola', 'Robe' and 'Rothbury' on the basis of pre-existing trademark rights. (The GIC is therefore unable to give further consideration to these applications until the objections have been considered by the Registrar of Trademarks).
