A case study in modern port production techniques: The Fladgate partnership's Quinta da Nogueira

Portugal’s douro valley has a long history of wine production that dates back to at least the first century AD, but the fortified wine styles that are now synonymous with Port were established in the first half of the nineteenth century. The Port trade has seen many ups and downs in the course of its long history, and at present there is strong demand for Port wines, particularly for Vintage Port and Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) styles. In Australian markets, the Fonseca and Taylor's Vintage Ports retail at around the $200 mark, the LBVs at close to $50. In 1998 the influential US magazine Wine Spectator rated the 1994 Taylor Fladgate and Fonseca Vintage Ports a perfect 100 points and were named an equal tie for best wines of the year.
