Australian Sangiovese on the verge of discovery

A range of Sangiovese styles was presented to Adelaide Plains Sangiovese producer Heather Ceravolo, of Ceravolo Estate; Briony Liebich, sensory analyst of Provisor; Mark Gishen of Adelaide Hills-based Gishen Consulting; and oenology student James Heyworth as they worked through 11 Australian-made wines, including blends, and three Italian wines at the Wake Campus of the University of Adelaide in late September.Heather said the use of oak did not seem to enhance the wines as tannin comes from the Sangiovese fruit. "The fruit needs to do the talking in great Sangiovese wines," Heather said. The panel had to work hard to choose a couple of favourite wines from this line-up, as one did not immediately stand out over the others. The higher-scoring wines were enjoyed for their typicity of style and food-friendliness. Those gaining the highest accolades were Pizzini's 2006 King Valley Sangiovese and Brokenwood's 2006 McLaren Vale-grown Sangiovese. The Castellare 2006 Chianti Classico from Tuscany, Italy, also had the panel talking.
