摘要

Proprietor of Cassegrain Wines, John Cassegrain, tells a story of when he was a young winemaker working for Tyrrell's in the Hunter Valley. It had been a poor vintage - the wines that year were flat and in need of pepping up. "If only we had some wine from New England," said Murray Tyrrell. John was surprised; he wasn't aware any wine was made in northern New South Wales. "Not any more," said Tyrrell. "But there used to be." Maurice O'Shea would often buy parcels from there to use for blending.rnCassegrain's interest was aroused. Moving on a couple of decades, I visited John in the early 1990s at his Cassegrainrnwinery in Port Macquarie, and questioned him on the viability of the Hastings River as a serious grapegrowing region.
