Following the successful transfer of a quantum key in a laboratory environment last year, researchers at the University of Canberra and University College (ADFA) have now succeeded in transmitting polarised single-photon qubits over a 50 metre free space path at Mt Stromlo in Canberra. Project leader Professor Paul Edwards (UC) and Dr Peter Lynam (ADFA) recently demonstrated daylight qubit transmission at a rate of 100 bits per second with a bit error rate of less than 2%. They used a pulsed InGaN LED transmitter operating at a wavelength of 532 nm. The receiver was installed at the Coude focus of the 750 mm satellite ranging telescope on Mt Stromlo constructed and operated by Electro Optic Systems for AUSLIG. the Australian Surveying and Land Information Group.
