Celebrating 20 years of peer reviewed articles on Australasian environmental management

This special issue commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Australasian Journal of Environmental Management. The first volume of the then Australian Journal of Environmental Management was published in July 1994 as the journal of the Environment Institute of Australia. With the formation of the New Zealand Chapter in 2003, the institute became the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand (EIANZ) and, the next year, the journal expanded its scope to become the Australasian Journal of Environmental Management (AJEM). As the peer-reviewed journal of EIANZ, the publication has sought to provide robust scientific evidence and strong policy analysis articles on issues relevant to EIANZ members and to serve as a platform for publication of scholarly articles to guide policy and practice. Editorial policy has remained very stable, with one managing editor for the first 11 years and two co-editor pairings sharing this role since 2005. The only possible instability lies in changes in publication method. Initially, the journal was published jointly with the Law Book company and, from 1998 to 2010, the Institute self-published (Ross & Carter 2013). In an e-world, the impact of peer-reviewed journals depends, in no small way, on e-submission, review and publishing in a manner that is accessible to the global community. Partly for this reason, EIANZ entered a publication arrangement with Taylor & Francis in 2011. This proved beneficial to the status of the AJEM, providing efficiencies to editorial and production functions that have been advantageous to authors.
