Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon resigned 4 June under increasing political pressure over alleged breaches of the Rudd government's code of conduct for MPs and cabinet ministers.rnFitzgibbon tendered his resignation to prime minister Kevin Rudd on 4 June; it was accepted immediately and Rudd announced the following Senator John Faulkner, a former minister for Defence Science ft Personnel in the Keating government, would replace him. Faulkner had previously been special minister for state and cabinet secretary, and is understood to have been an attendee at most if not all meetings of the National Security Committee (NSC) of cabinet. He is therefore familiar with most of the major operational and managerial issues confronting the defence portfolio.
