SHIFT TO SYDNEY

Pannell KNEW 12 MONTHS in advance that a shift to Sydney was imminent; it was largely motivated by her husband's work commitments. Aware that 60 per cent of pieces sold from the Auckland store were purchased by people who did not live in the country, many of them from Australia, she decided to close the Auckland retail outlet and open another in Sydney. But finding a store in her preferred locations in the city, she describes, as a 'nightmare' although she is now well settled in the Woollahra premises. "For two years, I had thought of opening a store in Sydney, even before we made the decision to move here, but I couldn't find a shop," she says. "I had the idea that only two places would work for us; the Strand Arcade in Pitt Street or Queen Street in Woollahra. Nothing came up until this store in October last year."
