JAERI's JT-60 Attains Critical Plasma Condition

On November 6, the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) announced that it had succeeded in attaining critical plasma condition (fusion energy multiplication factor over 1.0) at the JAERI Tokamak-60 (JT-60) for the first time on October 31, during plasma discharge experiments using deuterium. The output energy theoretically exceeded the supplied energy for the first time, if a nuclear fusion reaction would occur when tritium was replaced with the 50% amount of deuterium used in this experiment.
