COMPARISON OF THE DAMAGE CAUSED TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND PUBLIC HEALTH BY NPP AND TPP

The results of a comparative evaluation of the risk to the environment and public health from nuclear power and fossil fuel power plants (natural gas and coal) are presented. The comparison was made in two variants: TPP (coal, gas) and NPP for particular sites and fuel cycles. The first comparison is important for supporting the decisions made by local and regional organs concerning the choice of site and source of energy and the second one is important for developing a strategy for the development of the country's fuel and energy complex. The key danger factors in the fuel-cycle stages (mining raw materials, energy production and waste disposal) were examined: action of atmospheric radioactive and non-radioactive emissions on worker and public health, accidents at NPP and in coal production and green-house gas emissions (CO_2 and methane).
