Elbert et al. (2000. Atmospheric Environment 34, 1109-1122) proposed that cloud water loadings (CWLs) are relatively constant at a particular site. This general statement is derived from measurements at MFK and SM and is extended to cloud and fog water data taken from an impressive literature survey. It inspired us to an analogous treatment of cloud water samples (n = 242) collected at the Sonnblick Observatory (SBO, 3106m a.s.l., Austrian Alps) during two field campaigns in May and June 1993 and September 1995. The same active cloud water sampler (CWS) was used during both the campaigns. The liquid water content was determined using a PVM-probe.
