摘要

Ever since the partition of the sub-continent in 1947, India and Pakistan have been arch rivals. The animosity has its roots in religion and history, and is marked by the long-running conflict over the "state" of Jammu and Kashmir. To make matters worse, the rivalry has also escalated into a dangerous nuclear arms race. For years, Pakistan had supported a guerrilla insurgency against the Indian authorities in Kashmir but in recent years Islamabad seems to have bent to US pressure and called off the biggest Pakistan-sponsored Kashmiri militant groups. Pakistan, however, has lately been kept busy with problems closer to home, such as the insurgencies along the border with Afghanistan and violence elsewhere in Pakistan.
