In an era where military budget continues to be under threat especially for countries not in a war footing, "Operations Other Than War" has been used to justify the procurement of military assets, which can be in use for peacetime duties as well. The world's military and shipbuilders have quickly adopted the designation of multi-purpose support ship (MPSS) for these dual role assets, once generally classified as auxiliaries or even amphibious warfare ships. Most MPSS in service or being built or planned in the region are generally landing ships, which have modified to accept command and control facilities, helicopter hangar, cargo and other necessities.
