Man-portable air defence systems (MANPADS) are light-weight surface-to-air missile systems designed to be operated by a single individual or a small crew, according to Small Arms Survey, a Swiss based research group. It described MAN-PADS as consisting of a launcher (grip-stock), a battery, and a missile packed in a launch tube that rests upon the shoulder of the operator.
