British and French policy towards the Middle East in 1915-1948 was extremely complicated, both on the ground and in the context of the changing overall relationship between the two countries. On both sides, there was no shortage of colourful individuals, whose exploits are related in some detail. Overall, the article focuses on the various consequences of the Balfour declaration, the clashes over policy towards Syria, and on Britain's complicated relationship with de Gaulle.
