摘要

After several years offrustration and delay, the telecoms and broadcast markets are on the move again, with 3G services finally on the horizon. And in the broadcast sector, the long-delayed Tata Sky DTH joint venture is off the ground, and conditional access is again on the menu for cable operators. The long-stunted DTH market is at a critical juncture, with Tata Sky having launched on Aug. 8 and trying hard to catch up with Zee-backed rival Dish TV, which had accrued about 1.45 million subscribers by end-September, nearly three years after launching. Tata Sky has gotten off to a sound start, with 100,000 subs at end-September, and it says it is adding 4,000 subs per week and that it plans to reach 1 million subscribers by the end of its first year of operations.
