China Telecom subsidizes 42 percent of mid- priced smartphones

China Telecom, which is China's lone CDMA 2000 operator, has provided subsidies equal to 42 percent of the prices of 11 mid-priced 3G smartphones. A new report from tech. 163. com states that the subsidies provided by China Telecom are nearly 25 percent more than those for the average 3G phone. By June 5, 2011, China Telecom had sold 2.85 million units of these subsidized smartphones, 75 percent of all 3G smartphone and about 29 percent of all 3G handsets. Around 2.286 million of these subsidized phones were priced at $108-$138. The company's total 3G user base stood at 20 million as of May 2011.
